Medications and Diabetes
Some medicines can affect blood sugar levels.
- Aspirin can lower blood sugar if taken in large amounts.
- Phenylephrine, epinephrine, and ephedrine can raise blood sugar and blood pressure levels.
- Phenylephrine, epinephrine, and ephedrine are found in asthma medicines, cold remedies and herbal teas.
- Fish oil may raise blood sugar levels
- Some people take fish oils to lower their cholesterol levels.
- Caffeine may also raise blood sugar levels.
- Caffeine is found in coffee, sodas, appetite suppressants, some headache remedies, 'pep' pills, and diuretics.
When to Call the Doctor?
Call 911 or go to an emergency hospital immediately if:
- You feel weak and nauseous, excessively thirsty, are urinating frequently, and have abdominal pain, rapid breathing, and noticeably sweet-smelling breath.
- You may have ketoacidosis.
- Ketoacidosis is a life-threatening condition.
- You experience extreme thrist, lethargy, weakness and mental confusion.
- A person known to have diabetes loses consciousness.
