10 Exercise Secrets Getting in shape seems to be on everyone's mind since summer is right around the corner. However, getting in shape and staying fit can be a challenge, especially if you are not use to exercising. Staying in shape requires you to workout and watch what you eat. It's easier for someone who has been working out for quite some time to stay in shape, but for those of us that have to start from scratch, it can be very difficult. No exercise program you put yourself on will work if you don't use it to your full advantage. Working out requires a lot of dedication and mental toughness. Set a routine that you know you will stay on. Don't start an exercise program that you won't be able to handle. Don't strive for perfection. Striving for perfection should not be the perfect goal to reach. Perfection will come over a period of time. If this is a goal you are trying to reach and you don't reach it, discouragement and disappointment will set in. Don't be discouraged if you can't do 20 sit ups, instead, set a goal to do 10 and then increase it as time goes on. Find a partner. Working out alone can be a bit of a drag. Try and find a friend to workout with. Find a friend that is just starting out so that the two of you can start on the same level. If you can't find a friend to workout with and you have a dog, take your dog for a short walk or run. Soon, your dog will start depending on the walks and will become your new workout partner. If you don't have a dog, walk your neighbor's dog (your neighbor will be eternally grateful) or walk one of your local animal shelter's dogs. Do it daily. Make it a daily routine to find ways to move your body. If you have the choice between taking the elevator or taking the stairs, give your body a little workout by taking the stairs. Anything that moves your body is great for your muscles. As an added benefit, the more you move your muscles, the more stress and tension you will release. Use what you have. If you do not want to join a gym, clear out floor space at your home and try simple floor exercises. Target areas such as your hips and buttocks. Working out at home may be a better fit for your lifestyle. If you don't have the space to work out at home, create a gym for free at your local park. Have fun. When most of us think about working out, we think of strenuous activity. Find something you like doing such as rock climbing or recreational sports like basketball, golf, tennis, and swimming. Train professionally. If you have a specific goal in mind or have a hard time finding motivation, consider hiring a professional trainer to help you reach your fitness goals. A professional trainer can focus on your flexibility, balance, and agility. A professional trainer can also determine your body's weakness, making it easier for you to focus on what your body needs to stay fit. Use a Wii. One of the most exciting fitness training programs on the market today is the Nintendo Wii Fit. If you want to exercise at home, and do fun activities with a customized personal trainer, purchase a Nintendo Wii. The Wii has various fitness exercises that will workout all parts of your body. The Nintendo Wii Fit will assess your height, weight, and tell you how much your weight should be for your size. Play with the right toys. Getting your children to workout can be a hassle. Children are mostly interested in playing with their toys and their friends. Buy your children toys that promote physical activity such as the Nintendo Wii or sports equipment. Fun rewards. Instead of rewarding your children with tasty treats for behaving well or getting an "A" on their report card, take them to places where physical activity will be present. Reward your children by taking them to the skating rink or plan an outdoor hiking trip for the whole family.
