What is Metatarsalgia?

Metatarsalgia is a term used to describe pain in the ball of your foot. The ball of your foot is located on the bottom of your foot, just before the beginning of the toes.

Metatarsalgia is a common foot disorder that can affect the bones and joints at the ball-of-the-foot.

Symptoms of Metatarsalgia

The most common symptoms are:

• pain in the ball of the foot
• feeling like you are walking on pebbles

What Causes Metatarsalgia?

There are many causes. The most common causes are conditions or situations where excess strain is placed on the ball of the foot.

Some other common causes are:

• narrow high arched feet
• flat feet
• rheumatoid arthritis
• stress fractures
• fluid accumulation in foot
• muscle fatigue
• overweight or obesity

Can Metatarsalgia be treated?

Yes. The first step in treating metatarsalgia is to determine the cause of the pain. The treatment will depend on the cause of the pain. In cases where improper fitting footwear is the cause of the pain, the footwear must be changed.
