What is Dental Insurance

Dental insurance is an insurance plan that will pay for costs of normal dental care as well as damage to teeth from an accident.

Types of Dental Insurance

There are two main types of dental insurance: scheduled and non scheduled plans.

Non Scheduled dental plans provides payment for dental treatment received by the covered individual on fee-for-service basis. Most insurance companies pay the full amount for preventative procedures. Preventative procedures include x-rays, cleanings, tooth sealants, nutritional counseling for dental diseases, and fluoride rinses. Most insurance companies will pay 50 to 80% of procedures that are non preventative. Non preventative procedures include teeth bleaching, fillings, braces, replacement of missing teeth, correction of abnormal tooth position and abstractions.

Scheduled dental plans are categorized by a listing of fixed allowances for each procedure. For example, the plan might pay $40 for a cleaning and $400 for root canal therapy. The insurance plan might include deductibles and coinsurance.

Some insurance companies offer a Preferred Dentist Program (PPD). A preferred dentist program is similar to a PPO insurance plan. In preferred dental programs, participating dentists provide services to patients with a 10 to 35% discount.

Things to think about before enrolling into a Dental Insurance Plan

• Does the organization provide what you think you will need in the future?
• Do you have any special needs (braces, tooth restoration)?
• If you have your own provider or specialists, do they belong to the network or must you switch to their network?
• Is the company offering the dental insurance reliable?
• Does the company offering dental insurance have a history of quality care in your area?
• Are the charges reasonable?
