What No One Tells You About Male Breast Reduction Surgery Enlarged male breasts are not a condition that a man has to learn to live with. Surgically male breasts can be reduced by removing a certain amount of both fat and in some cases also glandular tissue. In rare cases some skin must also be removed from the chest. Most men are pleased with the results and feel better about their physical appearance once their chest has been contoured and has taken on a more masculine look. This type of surgery can be done on males of any age who are deemed emotionally stable and who are realistic about what to expect. Men whose skin is both firm and elastic will respond well to this form of contouring surgery. This kind of surgery is discouraged for males who are overweight or obese. An estimated 40 to 60 percent of males have enlarged breasts with some being larger and more protrusive than others. As well some males have one breast that is enlarged while the other is normal size. Some males are born with enlarged breasts while others develop it due to excess weight, while since others can acquire enlarged male breasts due to the use of drugs on a consistent basis such as alcohol, anabolic steroids and/or marijuana. Other possible causes of enlarged male breasts include medications that contain the female hormone estrogen, liver function that is impaired, herbal testosterone additives, problems relating to testicular hormone production and a variety of other causes. Smoking can wreck havoc with the healing process. You would not be considered a good candidate for male breast reduction if you presently smoke, have smoked for a number of years, have recently stopped smoking after a number of years and/or are exposed to second hand smoke on a consistent basis. Both primary and secondary smoking reduces the body's ability to heal itself and to repair tissues. Smoking can result in a variety of complications such as skin loss, infection, prolonged wound healing, etc. The scars from surgery do not respond well to sunlight and therefore it is wise to do everything you can to keep your scars out of the direct sunlight for a period of at least 12 months or more. If exposure to direct sunlight is unavoidable then always wear a sunblock with a high sun protection factor (SPF) such as SPF 30 or SPF 45 and reapply it often for optimum protection. It often takes many months to see the complete results of male breast reduction surgery. Be patient with yourself and with the healing process as the rate of healing for everyone is not the exact same. After the surgery the breast tissue will not grow back but the swelling will begin to subside in a few weeks but could take many more months to completely go away. The good news is that male breast reduction surgery is permanent and should leave you feeling much better about how your body looks after the surgery as opposed to how it looked before.
