The Risks of Nose Reshaping

All types of surgical procedures involve risks and complications. Some patients are likely to experience more than one of these problems whereas other people may suffer very few, if any complications following their surgery.

Pain and Discomfort

It is likely that your face and nose area will feel sore for a number of days. For some people this can last up to a week. In most cases the plastic surgeon will prescribe pain medication to get the patient through the rough patches. How much pain a person suffers varies from individual to individual.

Swelling and Bruising

Some people experience a tremendous amount of bruising that is very noticeable. This bruising can last for a number of weeks before it shows signs of going away. Swelling is also common and might last anywhere from one week to three or four weeks. Realize that both bruising and swelling are normal side effects of nose reshaping surgery.

Bleeding

Bleeding, also known as haematoma, can take place in the vicinity of the surgical site after the patient has gone home. In most cases bleeding will be light and will go away relatively soon. There are cases however where blood that has built up under the skin must be drained if it becomes excessive.

Seroma

A seroma is when there is localized swelling of fluid under the skin that can lead to more serious complications. This is a rare condition but when it does occur it may necessitate a procedure to drain the fluid and in some cases medication as well.

Infection

Plastic surgeons attempt to be as careful as possible when they operate but making an incision in the skin means that the door is open for bacteria to enter the skin. Most people who are in good health are not likely to develop an infection as a result of nose reshaping surgery but you need to be aware of the symptoms of infection just in case. If you experience weakness, extreme tiredness, a fever, or pus oozing from the surgical site, get to the doctor right away for treatment.

Sensitivity Changes

Numbness is a common side effect of nose surgery as is having increased sensitivity or as some patient describe it, “an unusual or strange sensation.” The numbness and heightened sensitivity should get better with time.

Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism

This is a very rare condition that can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated immediately. Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism occurs as a result of the anesthesia used during surgery and in this case a blood clot forms in the veins, which is most often located in the legs and once there it can interfere with the functioning of the lungs and can travel to the brain and cause death. Patients are encouraged to wear special stockings before their surgery, to not get dehydrated after surgery and to move around as much as they are able to following the surgery.
