The Risks of a Tummy TuckBe aware that everyone is not a good candidate for a tummy tuck so always discuss all of the benefits as well as the risk factors with the plastic surgeon when you go in for your initial consultation. There are certain health conditions that can increase your chance of having complications and these should always be disclosed to the plastic surgeon right away. If you suffer from diabetes or have a history of blood clots let the plastic surgeon know. If you have lung disease, heart disease, any types of circulatory problems or any other kinds of serious medical problems always make the surgeon aware of these facts. If you have any abdominal scars that are left over from surgeries performed in the past let the plastic surgeon know. The reason for this is that scars that are already on the skin above the region of the belly button could very likely become more obvious after a tummy tuck procedure has been done. Tummy tuck surgery is for the most part a safe procedure. Be aware however that there are always risks to take into account. There is the risk of the patient having an adverse reaction to the anesthesia that is used during the surgery. Some patients experience an accumulation of blood under their skin, which is known as a blood blister or a hematoma. This can be quite painful and can lead to a great deal of swelling at the surgical site. If this happens, the patient must return to the surgeon in order to put an end to the bleeding, and then to get rid of the excess blood in order to avoid the chance of an infection developing. Some patients will experience a poor degree of healing which can lead to excessive and noticeable scars. This often constitutes a second surgery for many patients. It is common to experience numbness after the surgery in the lower region of the tummy and this can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months although it generally lessens with time. It is rare but some individuals are left with a certain amount of permanent numbness in the region that was operated on. Developing severe complications from a tummy tuck procedure are rare but they do happen. Some patients experience heavy bleeding or develop an infection at the surgical site afterwards. Lung problems are rare but some patients begin having breathing problems following the surgery. The formation of fat or blood clots in the blood vessels (generally in the leg) can happen and it can be deadly if it is not diagnosed and treated right away. When they do occur blood clots usually happen to women who are taking birth control pills and have been doing so for a number of years. Skin tissue death (or necrosis) is uncommon but sometimes happens to tummy tuck patients who are smokers and those who suffer from diabetes.
