Children and racism

Its easier for adults to understand racism and how it happens, but explaining racism to your child can be a very difficult situation. For younger children, use creative ways to help them understand what racism means and why it is wrong. Here are a few tips that can help you explain to your child the reasons for racism.

• Have your kids get involved in charities that help fight racism. They can learn a lot from people that have experienced racism.
• Purchase books and obtain pictures of great figures who fought racism such as Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, and Robert Kennedy. This will give your child a glance of how important the fight against racism is.
• If someone in your family blurts out racist comments, speak out against it, soon your child will follow you and do the same.
• Teach your children about different races and their culture. This will help your child understand that just because they have a different skin color, we're all human beings.
• Teach you children to treat everyone as they would like to be treated.
• Explain to your child that racism is a weakness, and that strong people don't have to make people feel bad about themselves, and being nice makes them strong.
• Keep your eyes open and pay attention to who your children are playing with. Do they exclude other children? If they do, encourage them to develop friendships with kids of different races and different backgrounds.

Following these steps will help educate your child on the issue of racism. Children easily imitate other people, so be careful who your child associates with. If you see your child participate in actions that may lead to racism, correct it.
