Surviving a long distance relationship
- Make an agreement of what your expectations are in the relationship and how much of a commitment you are willing to give and receive.
- Make contact every day - Take the time to at least send an email or text message letting them know how important they are. Failing to constantly check in with your mate may make them feel abandoned.
- Plan to see each other regularly - Plan regular trips to see each other during your time apart.
- Make the relationship a priority - Even though you are miles away, your significant other has to feel as if they're still a major part of your life. Don't cancel a planned phone call or visit for things that you could honestly do without.
- Trust your partner - Don't be in a long-distance relationship with someone you can't trust.
- Keep your partner informed about your life.
- Be creative and find ways to reduce the costs of travel and phone calls so you can meet and talk more often.
- Make plans for the future
- Communicate honestly.
When things get hard, talk about it. Don't let the distance keep you from bringing up the hard stuff. Deal with the issues as they come up or they will fester and get worse.
- Talk via webcam so your partner can see you.
- Send a care package. Care packages are a fun and cute way to keep in touch. Include inside
joke items, cards, music, books, candy, pictures, video message, etc.
- Before moving, spend several weeks with the person at different times of the year.
