In order to properly assess your compatibility with your partner, it is important to understand their financial status and how they deal with money issues.

Money and stress

If you have financial-related anxieties, it is important to discuss them with your partner. If you become emotionally distant or stressed when you experience money related anxieties, and are not upfront about your money-related anxieties with your partner, then your partner may assume that stress comes from somewhere else. Often, your partner will start to wonder if they have done something wrong.

Women who make more money than men

Women in their 20s who work full time in several American cities — New York, Chicago, Boston and Minneapolis — are earning higher wages than men in the same age range, according to a recent analysis of 2005 census data by Andrew Beveridge, a sociology professor at Queens College in New York. The income gap is largely driven by a gulf in education: 53 percent of women employed full time in their 20s were college graduates, compared with 38 percent of men. Women are also more likely to have graduate degrees.

Women who make more money than their male counterparts are encountering forms of hostility they weren’t prepared to meet. These women are often forced to figure out how to balance pride in their accomplishments against their perceived need to bolster the egos of the men they date.

The money gap

If you make more money than the person you are dating, there are a few things that you should think about. Some things to think about are:

• Many people choose to work in personally rewarding fields (social services, non-profit organizations) and are paid next to nothing, yet make a huge impact on others.
• Work ethic is often more important than the amount of money a person makes.
• What does money mean to you?
• Is it important that you date a person who makes as much money as you?
