Sex on Prom Night

Many teens believe that prom night is about getting dressed up, dancing, and having sex. If you are unsure about whether you want to have sex on prom night, you are not alone. Some people choose to have sex, and others don't. And you're the only one who can make that decision. Don't feel pressure to have sex just because it's a special night. Prom night will be even more memorable if your memories are happy instead of regretful.

Communicating your expectations for the prom will help eliminate confusion. Be sure not to llet alcohol or other drugs influence your decision.

When it comes to sex, you have several options:

• You can choose to not have sex. If you do not want to have sex, make sure your date is aware of your decision. Also, be prepared for their reaction. They might feel relieved, rejected, or disappointed. However, if you date really cares about you, they will respect your decision and will not make you feel bad about it. Once you make your decistion, stand by it. Don't let anyone change your mind.
• You can choose to engage in intimate touching without having sexual intercourse. Be careful. This is a very 'slippery slope'. Some times intimate touching can go too far and become sex. It is important to be open and honest with your date about your decison. Intimate touching can include things like kissing and body rubbing Remember, even kissing and body rubbing can put you at risk for some sexually transmitted infections.
• You can choose to have sexual intercourse. If you decide to have sexual intercourse, you need to be prepared. Have you talked about sex with your partner? Do you both agree this is what you want to do? Are you prepared with birth control? Birth control offers protection against pregnancy, but only latex and female condoms reduce the risk of pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

Questions to consider and to talk about with your date before the night of the prom:

• Will we be sexually involved?
• Will we have sexual intercourse?
• If we get sexually involved, how will we protect ourselves from pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections?

Communicating your expectations for the prom can help eliminate any confusion. Whatever you do, don't let alcohol or other drugs make the decision for you!
