What will happen after the surgery?

While you are still recuperating in the hospital after your surgery you will be put on medication to help you cope with the pain for a period of three days or thereabouts. After this time period is up, you will begin to feel more like yourself again and you will be able to get up and around and you can prepare to go home. The surgeon who performed your operation will sit down and talk with you about his expectations for you now that you have undergone gastric bypass surgery. He will also discuss how your diet must now change as well as the important part that physical fitness must play in your life in regards to keeping the weight off. The surgeon will also explain what you need to be careful of and a date and time will be scheduled for your first follow up appointment.

Talk with the surgeon

The surgeon will give you some information to take home with you regarding your diet, when you can start eating regular foods again, the quantity of liquids you are allowed to consume, what vitamins and minerals are required to supplement your daily diet and the way in which you must now eat. The surgeon will also make it clear what foods and drinks you must completely refrain from consuming, such as carbonated beverages and anything that is high in sugar content.

The surgeon will inform the patient how long he must be away from work and how long he must go without driving a motor vehicle. It is important for the surgeon to carefully explain to the patient how to best care for their incisions as well as to discuss any complications that have arisen as a result of the surgery, or any that could arise once the patient returns home and goes back to his normal life.

A patient who has had gastric bypass surgery has undergone major surgery and therefore requires time to heal. It is important to ask the surgeon any questions that come to mind and to always know who to call in case of an emergency. Bring all of your concerns to the table when you sit down with the surgeon, as no question is too small or too silly to ask. Make sure to carefully listen to everything the surgeon has to say and to follow his instructions explicitly.
